More sheltered and with a milder climate, the rural woodlands to the south are criss-crossed with little rivers, which run to the coast. In the east are the medieval market towns and border fortresses; while the wind-battered west coast, exposed, eroded and dramatically rugged, is well deserving of its title Finistere – “the end of the earth”.
The most westerly corner of the country, this is where Breton traditions are best observed, from their colourful Celtic culture to their costumes and creperies. Officially part of France for almost five centuries, Brittany is still spiritually individual.

Lobster, mussels, oysters and St Jacques’ scallops are among the mouth watering specialities of many a restaurant here. Try them accompanied by a dry white Muscadet from southern Brittany or a long glass of cool cider, the traditional drink of the region. Sweet and savoury crepes come with a bewildering choice of fillings for a quick snack or delicious dessert.
